Feeling lost, confused or overwhelmed? You are not alone. People who are new to Medicare often have a hard time sorting things out in the beginning. There are all these parts and plans with similar letters, which makes it hard to figure out what is what.

Turning 65?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for:

  • people 65 and older
  • people with certain disabilities
  • people with end-stage kidney failure.

There are several parts to Medicare, which are explained below. Understanding what these parts are and how they work, will help you make a more informed decision when you reach this stage of your life.

Part A

Part A covers inpatient care, which includes hospital care, hospice, care received at a skilled nursing facility and, in some cases, home health care.

Part B

Part B helps pay for services from doctors and other health care providers, outpatient care, home health care, durable medical equipment, and some preventive services

Part C

Part C (Medicare Advantage Plan) combines the services provided by Part A & B and usually includes Part D benefits (prescription drug coverage). Part C also provides additional benefits like dental, vision, and hearing.

Part D

Part D provides prescription drug coverage. Also known as Rx.
